The capacity argument: the friction that slowed Bitcoin's human adoption was never the agent's.

In brief. The worry: the agent economy inherits Bitcoin’s human learning curve — seed phrases, irreversible sends, self-custody with no one to call — and adopts the substrate just as slowly. It doesn’t, because that friction was never monetary: it was interface, custody, and cognitive overhead, almost none of which applies to software. That curve was never a flaw in the money — just the natural shape of an open, protocol-first system with no central onboarding team. So the human curve doesn’t predict the agent’s: agents can adopt Bitcoin trivially, which narrows the real contest to defaults and authority — the fight in Border Skirmishes.


The friction was never the money

Reconstruct what early Bitcoin asked of a human user, honestly, and notice what is not on the list. It asked you to manage private keys (a seed phrase you cannot reset — lose it once and the funds are gone); to accept irreversibility (a mistaken or scammed payment does not come back); to live without chargebacks or a dispute desk; without a support line to call; and, to do it fully self-sovereign, to run or trust your own infrastructure (nodes, wallets, channel management). These are real asks, and they are usability asks — the distance between what the protocol provides and what people are accustomed to.

Two things about that distance matter, and neither is a knock on Bitcoin. First, none of it is a defect in the money. The fixed supply, the censorship-resistance, the settlement assurance, the neutrality — the monetary properties were never what paced adoption; people did not decline Bitcoin because twenty-one million was the wrong number or because no one could freeze their coins. By the only scoreboard that matters for an asset, Bitcoin’s human adoption has been the most successful in financial history. Second, the friction is the natural shape of an open, decentralized system. No central company owns the onboarding funnel; no single team is mandated to sand down every edge. The protocol was built bottom-up and permissionlessly — much of the effort going into the base layer itself — and the polish accretes the same way: distributed across a whole ecosystem of wallets and services, steadily, and still ongoing. Self-custody UX in particular is dramatically better than it was and improves every year. The learning curve is the character of building money in the open, not a verdict on the money.

So read the human curve not as Bitcoin falling short of its users but as a human-factors gap — the ordinary, narrowing gap between a powerful open protocol and everyday habits. Which sets up the real question, because that gap was always measured against human habits and tolerances. What happens when the adopter is not human?


The inversion: what asks effort of a person is native to an agent

Run the same list again, this time for an autonomous software agent, and every entry flips from something to adapt to into something already true.

Irreversibility is determinism. What gives a human pause — a payment that cannot be undone — is exactly what a deterministic system wants. An agent does not fat-finger an address; it computes one. Finality with no chargeback is not a hazard to insure against; it is a settlement guarantee the agent can build on without reserving for reversal risk. The property a person has to be careful around is the property a machine builds on.

Self-custody is native key-holding. A person has to learn what a private key is, be walked through writing down a seed phrase, and form new habits to keep it safe — an unfamiliar discipline, and the part of Bitcoin the ecosystem has worked hardest to make gentler. An agent is, at bottom, a process holding cryptographic material. Generating, storing, and signing with keys is not a new skill it must acquire; it is the substrate it already runs on. Self-custody, the heaviest lift for a newcomer, is the default mode of a piece of software.

Protocol detail is just parsing. UTXOs, scripts, channel states, macaroons, invoices — the mental model that is a genuine learning curve for a newcomer is, to an agent, structured data with a specification. Parsing a protocol and following its rules is the most basic thing software does. The detail that takes a person real study is a non-event for a machine that reads the spec and complies.

No support line is no dependency. The absence of an institution to call is, for a person, something to get comfortable with. For an agent operating autonomously, dependence on a human-staffed support desk would instead be a limitation — a synchronous, human-paced bottleneck in the middle of a system that runs in milliseconds. Not needing a support line is not a gap to be filled; it is the removal of exactly the kind of human-in-the-loop dependency autonomy is meant to eliminate.

Stated plainly: the same uncompromising properties that ask care and adaptation from a person are native to an agent. This is not Bitcoin being badly designed for people and incidentally good for machines — it is one set of properties (finality, self-custody, protocol rigor) met from two different sides. A person adapts to them, with the help of an ecosystem that keeps making the adapting easier; an agent is already built the way they assume.


The curve doesn’t transfer

The most common way to forecast agent adoption is to take Bitcoin’s human adoption curve — gradual, ecosystem-built, seventeen years of steady maturation — and assume software inherits its shape, perhaps faster. That extrapolation is a category error, because the curve was never measuring the money. It was measuring human acclimation: how long it takes people to get comfortable with irreversibility, to trust self-custody, to build the habits and the tooling and the cultural permission — and how long an open ecosystem takes to make each of those easier, without a central team driving it. A curve that measures a population’s acclimation predicts nothing about a population that does not need to acclimate.

The agent has no learning curve for irreversibility — it never needed the comfort. It has no seed-phrase anxiety — key-holding is its native state. It needs no recovery flow, no progressive-disclosure onboarding, no reassurance that its funds are safe. The decades of UX work that human adoption required — custodial on-ramps, social recovery, friendlier wallets, the slow accretion of trust — are scaffolding for a building the agent does not have to climb. So the seventeen-year figure is not a floor the agent economy has to work down from; it is a number about humans that simply does not apply. The barrier was population-specific, and the agent is not in that population.

This is why “adoption” means something different on each side of the asymmetry. For humans it was a long acculturation. For agents it is a configuration — a matter of which library is imported and which keypair is generated, not a matter of comfort earned over years.


The bound: capability is not authority

Here the honest-middle discipline requires a hard boundary, because the argument is easy to overstate. Everything above establishes that agents can adopt the Bitcoin substrate trivially. It does not establish that they will. Capability is not authority.

An agent can hold keys and settle in sats the moment it is told to — but whether it does is decided by its principal and, more quietly and more powerfully, by the defaults of the SDK it was built on. If the default agent-payments library ships with a stablecoin wallet and a card-rail integration, the overwhelming majority of agents will transact in stablecoins over card rails, not because they couldn’t do otherwise but because no one changed the default. Capability is necessary for adoption and nowhere near sufficient. The deciding variable is not “can the agent” — that is settled — but “what does the default do, and what does the principal authorize.”

So this surface is deliberately bounded. It wins exactly one thing, and wins it cleanly: it permanently retires the oldest objection to the entire thesis“Bitcoin is too hard, too risky, too unforgiving for normal use.” That objection was always an argument about human friction, and it does not survive contact with an adopter that has none. What it leaves standing is the real contest, the one worth having: not capability but defaults and authority — which agent stacks standardize on which substrate, and what principals permit. That contest is live, and it is Border Skirmishes’ subject, not this page’s. The honest counter — and what would prove it wrong

The clean test follows directly from the bound. If agent stacks standardize on stablecoins by default, regardless of what agents are technically capable of holding, then capability was not determinative — the defaults and the authority were, and they pointed elsewhere. That is a real, measurable outcome, and it is the one that would make this argument’s reach narrow.

But notice precisely what it would and would not refute. It would not refute the claim on this page — that agents can adopt Bitcoin trivially remains true even in a stablecoin-default world; the capability is unchanged. It would instead confirm the bound: that capability, having been settled, is not where the contest is decided. This surface is honest about being one move in a larger game. It does not argue agents will choose Bitcoin; the requirement-and-match argument for why they should is The Case, the premise that there is an economy to choose for is The Agent Economy, and the live fight over defaults is Border Skirmishes. What it argues, and all it argues, is that the friction excuse is spent — that “too hard for normal use” was a fact about people, not about the money, and the agent economy does not inherit it.

That is a smaller claim than “agents will adopt Bitcoin,” and a more durable one. The asymmetry is not a prediction about who wins. It is the removal of the reason most people assumed the question was already closed against Bitcoin — and once it is removed, the question is genuinely open, to be settled on defaults and authority rather than on difficulty.
